Jamaica could force an outright win against Guyana on today's final day of their three-day TCL Group WICB U-19 Cup match at Sabina Park.

Outstanding all-round performances from Kingston College's Akeem Dewar and Eltham High's Romeo Dunka have placed the hosts in the driver's seat.

Dunka, who captained Eltham High to the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) urban area U-19 league and knockout double, and Dewar, who led Kingston College to the semi-finals, shared in an 83-run seventh wicket partnership to guide Jamaica to 292-7 declared in their first innings in response to Guyana's 160.

Batting a second time

Guyana, batting a second time and trailing by 132 runs, then reached 98-4 when stumps were drawn.

Dewar, who came to crease with Jamaica in trouble at 83-5 after losing overnight batsman and captain Paul Palmer Jr via the run out route, made a patient but stroke-filled 70 not out, while Dunka - the much more aggressive of the two - made 59 not out.

Clarendon College's wicketkeeper Kirk Harris, 53, and Holmwood Technical's Jermaine Blackwood (31), who was seven not out overnight, also made useful contributions against left-arm 'chinaman' bowler, Totaram Bishun, who claimed 4-60.

Dewar and Dunka, who are the lead spin and pace bowlers in the team, respectively, then returned in late afternoon to bag a wicket apiece as Guyana, who were at one stage struggling at 14-3, caved in to a motivated and pumped up Jamaican outfit.

Guyana were lifted, however, by a stroke-filled 48 from opener Trevon Griffith. He shared in a 78-run fifth-wicket stand with Jonathan Foo, who is on 36 not out.

"It was our best day of the competition so far," said a smiling André Coley, coach of Jamaica. "Dewar, Harris and Dunka batted admirably and at the end of the day's play we did what we needed to do in the field. We just have to come tomorrow and try to drive home our advantage," he added.

In other matches, joint leaders leaders Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago claimed first innings points over the Leeward Islands and the Windward Islands at Elletson Road and Jamaica Broilers Group Oval, respectively.
