End charade with British monarchy

The Editor, Sir:

The article in your July 12 edition, titled 'Blacklisted again' prompted me to write this letter and to express my support of any attempt to remove "Her Majesty" as the head of state of our country.

In 2003, the British government imposed visa requirements on our people. Almost all its Caribbean dependencies, including the Cayman Islands, now require Jamaicans to obtain visas to visit their countries and spend our hard-earned dollars. The British government is in the process of imposing some type of special tax on its citizens travelling to the Caribbean, which will have the effect of damaging our tourist industry.

Now comes the requirement that all Jamaicans, transiting through its airports, will have to fork out $7,400 for an intransit visa. In other words, the British government not only does not want any Jamaican in its county but we should not even pass through its airport on the way to another country.

Revenge

The sons and daughters of our former colonial masters are simply getting their revenge.

With this in mind, let us close King's House, retire the governor general and turn the property into an educational institution for higher learning. Let's remove the Privy Council as our final court of appeal and let's remove all references to Her Majesty from all our institution. After all, why should we continue with this charade that we are still a part of the British Commonwealth when there is no benefit to the country.

I am, etc.,
