The Jamaica Hockey Federation (JHF) in association with the Olympic Solidarity Movement will be staging an International Hockey Federation's (FIH) Level 1 coach certification course, July 23-26.
This certification is internationally recognised and is intended to certify 25 current, active local hockey coaches.
The training session will be led by FIH Grade 1 Coach, Niall Sturrock of Scotland and he will be assisted by FIH L/evel II certified coach, Philip Fernandes of Guyana and Lizzie Sturrock, also of Scotland, a trainer of coaches.
The JHF board has identified several objectives for the sport directed at increasing the player base and quality of play in the sport. Chief among these is the development of our coaches who are entrusted with the introduction and development of the sport at all levels in the educational system as well as at the club and national levels.
This focus also coincides with a requirement by the Ministry of Education, communicated to schools in September 2008, which indicated that all coaches with responsibility for running co-curricular/intra-mural programmes are to be certified to at least a Level 1 standard.
