Cop warns against 'robots'

Inspector of Police Wilbert Affleck has cautioned parents against patronising the operators of unlicensed taxicabs, echoing previous security concerns voiced by road and law-enforcement officials.

Affleck, speaking during the launch of Jamalco's road safety campaign at the Annunciation Basic School in Hayes, Clarendon, recently, warned parents of the risks to themselves and their children of supporting so-called 'robot' taxis.

Citing several recent accidents that have occurred on the nation's streets, he said illegal cabbies often operated recklessly and were more concerned about making money than preserving passenger safety.

Carefully select

He advised parents to carefully select the vehicles in which they travel, and ensure that these are only authorised public passenger vehicles, fitted with red licence plates.

Meanwhile, Ealane Livingston Smith, Jamalco's public relations specialist, said the company would continue to promote road safety by sponsoring the placement of traffic wardens in designated school zones.

These comprise Annunciation Basic, and Mocho and York Town primary schools in Clarendon; and Campbell's Castle and Pratville all-age schools in Manchester.
