Cricket - TCL Group West Indies U-19
The Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) announced a 14-man squad to represent Jamaica in the upcoming TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Championship. The tournament will be held here from July 9 through August 5.
The squad members are: André Creary (captain), Courtney Allen, Jermaine Blackwood, Ramon Senior, Paul Palmer, John Campbell, Nicholson Gordon, Patrick Harty, Kirk Harris (wicketkeeper), Jermaine Cole, Garth Garvey, Romeo Dunka, Brian Clarke, Akeem Dewar. Reserves: Hanchard Hamilton, Kemar Marshall, Donovan Nelson, Omar Samuels. Coach: André Coley; Manager: Fritz Harris.
Tennis - Globe Insurance Junior Tennis Open launch
Jamaica's top juniors will get an opportunity to sharpen up for tough international competition when the PanCaribbean Bank All Jamaica Junior Tennis Championships serves off at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre on July 1.
The premier local junior event will be contested by players from all across the island looking for a chance to gain entry to the ITF Jamaica Junior Tournament, which will take place from July 13 to July 18 at the same venue. This year's tournament will feature boys and girls' singles competition in the 10, 12, 14, 16 and Under-18 category.
On the girls' side of the draw, top-talent squad juniors Shantal Blackwood are Sicquena Sinclair will be contenders for the girls' Under-18 title, but will have their work cut out for them as overseas based sisters Simone and Lauren Vranov-Brown will make the trip for the event.
Football - Claro/KSAFA U-20 final
Harbour View on Under-20 second-half goals from Shamar Shelton and Romario Campbell defeated Meadhaven 2-0 to lift the Claro/KSAFA Under-20 Champions League title.
Earlier in the season Meadhaven had captured the league title.
GraceKennedy/ISSA 2010 Champs will be big
Chairman of the ISSA Boys' and Girls' Championships Planning Committee, Clement Radcliffe, is predicting a greater show for the 2010 Boys' and Girls' Champs at its 100th staging.
Speaking at a press conference at which title sponsor of the 2009 Boys and Girls Championships, Grace-Kennedy, presented awards and trophies to the outstanding performers, Radcliffe noted that the 2009 event would "pale in terms of significance and magnitude as the 2010 Boys' and Girls' Champs will be bigger and better".
He commended GraceKennedy and its sister companies, First Global Bank, First Global Financial Services Limited, Jamaica International Insurance Company and Western Union for their contribution over the past three years, which have resulted in a wonderful show for Jamaica.
Also speaking at the event was Grace Foods CEO Erwin Burton. He noted that GraceKennedy's involvement in the Boys' and Girls' Championships showed the importance of his company's commitment to "help our young people to achieve their potential, to see their dreams become reality. This decision to invest in young people was a deliberate one which we took many years ago. It is a commitment which we have sustained, and one which has made us proud in many ways."
