Squatters to be evicted - St Catherine houses set to be restored

Housing Agency of Jamaica Limited (HAJ) is currently completing the construction of infrastructure works at Bourkesfield Meadows, Old Harbour Bay, St Catherine.

The HAJ will also be repairing the 75 houses donated by the Venezuelan Government for victims of Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

The houses were never delivered to the intended beneficiaries and over the past four years the scheme has been taken over by persons who have vandalised and captured a number of the houses.

Notices ignored

The unlawful occupants have been given ample opportunity to peaceably vacate the premises and have ignored the notices to quit.

These notices expired on June 8.

Joseph Shoucair, HAJ's managing director, said "The agency must retake possession of the houses if they are to be repaired and made fit for occupation by the designated beneficiaries. We will, therefore, be proceeding to effect the exercise without delay."

Work at Bourkesfield Meadows will include the completion of roads and drains, construction of sewerage and provision of electricity and water supplies.

HAJ is an agency of the Ministry of Water and Housing.
