THREE MEN with possible ties to the illegal lottery scam that has roots in western Jamaica are in police custody. They were arrested last week in Linstead, St Catherine.

Superintendent Fitz Bailey, head of the Organised Crime Investigation Division (OCID), told The Gleaner on Monday that the men have not been charged but will be interrogated this week.

Bailey did not disclose the identities of the men, two of whom are 20 years old and the other 23.

He said they are from Mandeville, Trelawny and Montego Bay, and work at a prominent hotel in Discovery Bay, St Ann.

They were handed over to the OCID by a squad from the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF), who arrested them in Linstead.

Laptop and money seized

Special Constable Gurvin Leachman of the ISCF said the men were driving along the Charlemont main road in Linstead when they were stopped. The police seized J$223,000 and a laptop which, they said, had over 20 names and addresses of persons residing in the United States.

In May, the Jamaican police and the United States Immigration and Custom Enforcement launched a task force to dismantle the lottery network. Assistant Commissioner of Police Les Green said it has fleeced persons in Jamaica and the US of more than US$30 million.

Green said the police have linked more than 400 murders to the scheme. Several persons, including 20 members of the police force, have been arrested in connection with the scam.
