St Thomas youths need help

The Editor, Sir:

Although Senator Warren Newby, parliamentary secretary in the Ministry of Youth, had stated the Government's intention to have a youth information centre operating in all 14 parishes within a reasonable time - the parish of St Thomas has yet to get one even though it is badly needed.

It has been four years since I have been dedicating my time and services in working with the youths in the parish and many are encouraging. However, they lack the facility to accommodate them. The National Centre for Youth Development-Youth Information Centre is making a great difference in the lives of many.

Resource centre

With regard to St Thomas, there is a great need for a 'cybercentre' with free Internet access, study centre, resource centre, counselling and referral services, career development and computer training opportunities. The St Thomas Parish Library has outgrown its capacity, and the computers are inadequate. As a result, it becomes crowed at times and many students are unable to get their assignments finished on time. Therefore, there is need to create a supportive environment for youth development.

The youths of today face many challenges and without the proper guidance, education and nurturing, many tend to go astray. Thus, they become vulnerable to negative behaviour which might lead to their involvement in illicit activities or other negative behaviour.
