Credit checks for SLB delinquents

The Editor, Sir:

I think the overall approach to the borrowing/lending relationship between students and the Students' Loan Bureau (SLB) needs to be revisited. That is, there should be a law that allows the SLB to check the annual PAYE/NHT returns of companies for delinquents.

There should also be a law that would see the financial institutions conducting credit checks with the SLB before any other loans are granted to graduates. We need to live in a society whereby our credit ratings can be obtained at the click of a button.

I know of cases whereby persons are working and refuse to repay their loans for no apparent reasons. I also know of cases where delinquents were able to obtain motor-vehicle loans from financial institutions. This must stop! I am saddened by this situation, particularly since I was a borrower and I made it my responsibility to repay my loan while furthering my studies, even though I did not have a huge salary. But this is responsibility that will make me feel like I deserve to be a part of society.

I am, etc.,
