Western Bureau: Wadadah crowned themselves 2008-09 Captain's Bakery Western Super League football champions at Jarrett Park, Montego Bay, on Thursday night, when they spanked Frome 3-1 in the competition's second-leg final to win the two-way tie 5-1 on aggregate.

"We knew they would come attacking in a bid to cut into our first-leg 2-0 lead, but we were ready and prepared for them," said Wadadah's coach, Daniel Ricketts.

"Our aim was to push them back with an early goal and we got that early goal and it was our game from there on," he added.

By virtue of their win, the Wadadah team, which took home the coveted Captain's Bakery Trophy and the $150,000 winner's purse, has now earned qualification to the 2009-10 Digicel Premier League elimination, which will see the various confederation champions vying for two places in next year's national championship.

In a game in which Frome FC played quite well but failed to make it reflect on the scoresheet, Wadadah got their goals through Jeremy Bucknor (2) and Oniel Selvin, while Frome's lone goal came from a peach of a free kick by Adrian Robinson.

all-out in attack

The opening exchanges saw Frome all-out in attack and forcing back Wadadah with crisp attacks on both flanks. However, despite creating scoring opportunities, they failed to breach the defence and goalkeeper Tristan Bernard.

Wadadah took the lead with their first meaningful attack in the 14th minute. Mark Williams fired in a good low cross from the right flank and Bucknor crashed home powerfully from four yards, making the half-time score 1-0.

Five minutes into the second half, Wadadah doubled their lead when Selvin intercepted a poor clearance from the Frome defence, dribbled a few paces and cracked a savage shot past goalkeeper Shamar Mullings, making the score 2-0 and giving Wadadah a four-goal cushion.

With all realistic hopes of a win gone, Frome completely abandoned defence and threw everything in attack. They looked quite ominous at times with Delano Rankine, Damion Green and Robinson heaping non-stop pressure on the Wadadah defence but to no avail.

On one of their quick counter-attacks, Wadadah struck for a third time in the 73rd minute. Another superb pass by Williams sent Bucknor clear and he made no mistake, driving his shot past the helpless goalkeeper, making the score 3-0.

With time running out, Frome finally got on the scoresheet when they won a direct free kick in the 82nd minute. Robinson's fierce shot whistled past Wadadah's defensive wall and crashed into the roof of the goal, making the final score 3-1.
