Westmoreland:

Wendell Downswell, coach of Reno FC, was bubbling with excitement and anticipation, having beaten Sporting Central Academy 3-2 at Frome on Sunday in a Digicel Premier League lower-six game, which gives him hope for a place next season.

He credited the victory to tactical changes he had made in the team.

"We have done some tactical changes to the team and it paid off," Downswell said after the high-energy game, which had the few spectators on their feet for most of its duration.

"We have a fair chance of staving off relegation now, but it will also be dependent on the results in the other games," added Downswell, whose team sits at the bottom of the 12-team standings with 32 points.

Main contenders

His main contenders are Village United, which have 34 points after tying 1-1 with Rivoli United at Spanish Town Prison Oval on Sunday; Meadhaven, which moved to 35 after their 1-1 draw with St Georges Sports Club at Constant Spring Football Field; and Sporting Central on 37 points.

Reno will play away to Village tomorrow and are at home to Meadhaven on Sunday.

A victory in both games would see the Westmoreland team back in business for next season.

In Sunday's game, Reno demonstrated that they are on a mission to remain in top flight football.

The game started with the teams knocking around the ball, but then the speedy Karl Wiggan of Sporting Central got a pass close to the target while unmarked, and beyond the reach of Aaron Lawrence in the Reno goal.

Three minutes later, Wiggan was again on the attack, but this time he served the ball to Hughan Gray, who converted to make it two-nil after just seven minutes into the game.

As if suddenly realising that defeat was imminent, the Reno team quickly regrouped and this paid off three minutes later.

Free kick

Gary McIntosh netted a brace to rally Reno, which were trailing until Nicholay Findlayson cracked home a low drive from a free kick.

Hope sprang into the players and the small bunch of spectators and the pressure built up and just three minutes later the decider was scored.

Findlayson collected a ball in the danger area and instead of firing at the target, he served an easy pass to McIntosh, who scored his second goal and put his team ahead.

The coach of Sporting Central Academy was unavailable for a comment as he exited the playing area promptly after the game. However, a single win from the two remaining games would be enough for a safe passage to the next season when they play at home against St Georges SC tomorrow and away to Village United on Sunday.
