Col Douglas' misplaced gripe

Published: Monday | March 16, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

I write in response to Col Allan Douglas' letter in The Gleaner (March 13) entitled 'An absurd JDF policy'.

Citing the case of the Haitian-born woman, who is the governor general for Canada, he said that appointing only Jamaican-born soldiers as chief-of-staff of the JDF is absurd and discriminatory.

Col Douglas' argument would be much more credible if, to justify his gripe, he had supplied valid and credible reasons to show why that policy is bad for Jamaica.

Handing over the military?

He writes from Florida, so I wonder if he also thinks that America's policy of employing citizens only in certain federal jobs or its ban on a foreign-born person becoming president are also discriminatory and absurd.

His letter said nothing about Canada's policy regarding who heads its military, which is where he should make a comparison. Why didn't he? Does Canada allow foreign-born persons to head its military?

Already, we have too many foreigners, not just foreign-born non-citizens occupying high positions in Jamaica and now you want to hand over the military, too?

I am, etc.,
