Old Harbour High's Kemar Bailey-Cole and Gayon Evans of Edwin Allen High fought against a strong headwind yesterday to secure victories in the senior sprint events on yesterday's opening day of the Milo-sponsored Central Track and Field Championships at G.C. Foster College.

Running into a 4.5m/s headwind, Bailey-Cole stopped the clock in 10.85 seconds to finish ahead of Brandon Tomlinson of Manchester High (11.31) and Clayton Bailey of St Jago (11.32) in the boys' Class One 100m.

"I feels good to win this 100m at Central Champs," said Bailey-Cole, who admitted he gave it his all while "fighting the wind".

Lost at carifta trials

In the girls' section, Evans, who lost at Carifta Games trials last weekend, secured the girls' Class One title posting 12.30. Ornella Livingston of Holmwood was second in 12.55 while Manchester High's Leslie-Ann Mitchell (12.67) was third.

At press time yesterday, after eight female finals, Holmwood were on top with 87 points. They were followed by Edwin Allen (68) and Manchester (48.5) while St Jago (44 points) were ahead of Edwin Allen (36.5) and Vere (36) in the boys' section.

Edwin Allen also won the Class Two girls 100m event with Shashawna Ffrench (12.47) edging out Vere's Peta-Gaye Beckford (12.48). Holmwood's Yanique Ellington was third in 12.50.

Melisa Williams of St Jago with 12.33 took the girls' Class Three 100m from Holmwood's Kedisha Dallas (12.70) and Janelle Kelly of Glenmuir (12.74).

Lower classes

In the lower classes among the boys, Jaime Wilson of Old Harbour High (11.26) beat Senoj-Jay Givans of Edwin Allen (11.41) to take the Class Two 100m while St Jago's Krishna Christie (11.87) beat Charlemont High's Ryan Stevens (11.89) in Class Three.

Conroy Crossman of Edwin Allen (1:54.55) beat Peter Matthews of Decarteret College (1:57.75) in the Class One 800m final while San-J Powell of Holmwood (1:59.75) took the Class Two event.

Franklyn Mitchell of Manchester High (55.39) and Ristananna Tracey of Edwin Allen (60.00) won the boys' and girls' 400m hurdles, respectively.

Kemoy Campbell of Bellefield (14:55.0) and Neisha Morgan of Manchester High,10:32.10 (record) took the boys' 5000m and girls' 3000m, respectively.

Manchester High's Chanice Porter leapt a record 6.10 metres to take the girls' Class Three long jump. Holmwood's Osheen Erskine took second with 5.70m.

Tamara Moncrieffe of Holmwood (5.50m) beat Vere's pair of Shadia Lawrence (5.33m) and Jehvania Whyte (5.27m) in Class Four long jump.

First and second

Holmwood with Nickeisha Beaumont (11.72m) and Kerry-Ann Walker (11.71m) took first and second in the girls' triple jump open.

Sasha-Gay Marston with throws of 40.21m and 12.22m captured the girls' Class One discus and shot put open events.

Vanessa Levy, also of Edwin Allen, with throw of 41.09m took the girls' Class One discus.
