Pacers David Bernard Jr and Andrew Richardson guided Jamaica to first innings honours over Trinidad and Tobago in their WICB Four-day Championship clash at Alpart Sports Club, St Elizabeth, yesterday.

Striking at different stages of the Trinidad and Tobago innings, which got off to a slow start at 30-2, after they had resumed the day on 18-0 in chase of the home team's first inning total of 275, the two combined to share six wickets, as the visitors were bowled out for 190.

Bernard grabbed 3-37 while Richardson, who put the visitors on the back foot very early in the day with the removal of overnight batsman Imran Khan for four, and captain Daren Ganga for a first-ball duck, claimed 3-62.

Fellow pacer Jason Dawes, who struck two crucial middle-order blows to have Trinidad struggling at 113-5, ended with 2-40, while left-arm spinner Nikita Miller grabbed 2-20.

Jamaica, with a first innings lead of 85, and having to face 23 overs in fading light, then closed at a precarious 54-3, this for a lead of 139.

Openers Brenton Parchment, 20, and Xavier Marshall, four, and captain Tamar Lambert, 14, are the batsman dismissed for Jamaica so far, while Donovan Pagon and night-watchman Andrew Richardson are not out on eight and four, respectively.

"We just have to come tomorrow and play some sensible cricket and post a big second innings score," said Jamaica's coach, Junior Bennett, who was not perturbed by the fact that Jamaica have lost three of their top batsman.

Trinidad, who are third in the standings behind leaders Jamaica, entered the match needing to either claim first innings or beat Jamaica outright to bridge the gap.Diminutive right-hand opener Adrian Barath, who was 12 overnight, and Kieron Pollard (29), who batted with uncharacteristic patience, then staged a brief fightback for the visitors, but with the score on 77 Barath, who stroked eight fours, was dislodged by Nikita Miller for 58.

Pollard then found an able partner in Sherwin Ganga (15) and together the pair took the score to 87-3 at lunch. Shortly after, however, Dawes was brought into the attack, and bowling on his home ground before an appreciative crowd, which grew as the day progressed, he found steep bounce and swing before dismissing Pollard and Sherwin Ganga, caught by wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh and Brenton Parchment at second slip, as the visitors slipped to 113-5.
