MY DOWN TIME WITH ... Nari Williams-Singh

Published: Sunday | March 8, 2009

Nari Williams-Singh, director, flight safety, Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority (JCAA)

Since the start of the year, at least three major aeroplane crashes have happened and in spite of statistics that show air travel to be the safest, many people are concerned about the things that can go wrong in the skies. Williams-Singh has a team of 18 staff members. He is responsible for aviation safety and security oversight for Jamaica and other operators entering our territory.

External operators have to meet JCAA regulations based on international standards. The JCAA also ensures that the airports have policy and procedures in place to ensure wildlife management (including birds). Interestingly, Jamaica's bigger problem is with stray dogs!

Q: What book are you reading now (or the last book you read)?

A: Gandhi: His Life and Message for the World. Given the present state of our country, we certainly could do with more people with Gandhi-like characteristics.

Q: Whose CD are you listening to now ?

Beres Hammond - The Ultimate Collection, Can't Stop a Man. What can I say about Beres that hasn't already been said? Timeless music for all ages and all occasions. My best memory of Beres performing is at Red Bones The Blues Café - it was an intimate setting and a wicked vibe! It was an after-party which followed a banquet for the Olympic athletes at Vale Royal.

Q: Where was the last interesting place you visited?

Georgetown, Guyana, it was my second trip to Guyana. I was there for the launch of the Caribbean Aviation Safety and Security Oversight System at the CARICOM headquarters. Georgetown has some of the most spectacular wooden buildings. Actually the St George Cathedral is one of the largest wooden structures in the world. The people of Guyana are extremely hospitable and the food is great! For my next trip there I plan on going into the interior and visiting Kaiteur Falls. The country is huge, there are islands in the Essequibo River that are larger than Barbados!

Check out Williams-Sing in Flair of Monday, March 30.
