A 71st minutes strike from substitute Terrence Shaw carried leaders Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) to a 1-0 victory over Santos in their final game in the first round of the Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA)/Claro Super League competition at Up Park Camp, on Saturday.
The JDF ended the round on 26 points, three ahead of second-placed August Town (23), who defeated Maverley/Hughenden (7) 3-1 at Maverley Park.
Santos remain in fourth place on 20 points. In the day's other games, Cavalier (21) edged Police National (6) 2-1, third-placed Bull Bay (22) played to a 1-1 draw with bottom-placed Liguanea United (0) and there was another 0-0 finish, between Real Mona (14) and Mountain View (4).
Owen Nelson, coach of the JDF, attributed his team's success in the first round to teamwork and discipline.
"I think that we have been playing to our strengths and this is one of the things that has gone well for us in this round," said Nelson.
"We have taken the approach that we are going to play with a lot of aggression and determination and this has worked for us so far this season and this is the reason why we are atop after the end of the first round," he explained.
Meanwhile, Carlton 'Spanner' Dennis, coach of Santos, said: "I think that indiscipline cost us the game, because we gave up a game that we should have won easily.
"The soldiers don't have a great team, but they played with discipline and we were indisciplined throughout, because we should have at least got a point from this game," he said.
Dennis added: "We will now look at our team personnel, because I am not going to continue in the second round with this," said Dennis.
