A correctional officer who was caught smuggling contraband into the St Catherine Adult Correctional Centre almost two years ago has pleaded guilty and has been sentenced to three months in prison.

He is Desmore Brown, 49, of Spanish Town, St Catherine.

Brown, whom the court learnt had spent more than 25 years in the correctional service, pleaded guilty when he appeared before Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar.

After he admitted his guilt, the judge thanked him for his cooperation, before handing down judgment.

"Thank you for not wasting the court's time anymore. I am hereby sentencing you to three months hard labour," Errar said.

Brown got into hot water when he was searched by his superiors on April 27, 2007. He was caught with a total of $6,000 in five different bundles with the names of five inmates written on each. A further search revealed parcels of tobacco.

The police were called in and he was charged with breaching the Corrections Act.
