EDITORIAL - Partial healing of America's soul
For all the country's greatness and that oversized sense of certitude Americans tend to have about their own place in the world, there has remained a yawning gap in the evolution of the United States that has caused a sense of unease with itself.

Peter's challenge: one of many firsts

On September 20, Portia Simpson Miller will either be returned or be replaced by Peter Phillips as president of the People's National Party (PNP). It is the first time that an incumbent president of the party is being challenged for that position. This is one of the many firsts which have occurred within the party in recent times. (Franklyn)

The gods and the Games

Lord Buddha must have taken his usual half-smile to a full broad smile, if not a Jamaican-style belly laugh, when he saw how superbly the Chinese, who are largely his by religious culture, staged the 29th modern Olympiad and captured medals themselves. (Henry)

The usefulness of steroids

The games of the 29th Olympiad have just concluded, and what a magnificent spectacle they were! An abundance of world records, a super medal haul and the incredible performance of our athletes, especially Usain Bolt, made these Olympics extra special for Jamaica. (Ruddock)
