LETTER OF THE DAY - A cold, callous act
The Editor, Sir: I could not believe my eyes when I saw the houses in shambles with furniture and personal belongings dashed all about as reported on the television news last week. The report was about the demolition of houses in Whitehall, Westmoreland, by the state agency - the National Housing Development Corporation (NHDC).
MPs and social housing
The Editor, Sir: Reference is made to the social housing programme that was initiated by then Prime Minister P.J. Patterson. The project was executed by the Ministry of Water and Housing and it was administered in a non-partisan, efficient, competent and professional manner.
Patois has its place
The Editor, Sir: Please allow me to reply to the writer who wrote about keeping patois at bay. If patois is so demeaning, why is it now being taught as a language in the University of Birmingham (UK) and a diploma awarded?
Language hindrance
The Editor, Sir: I was reading your online edition and saw the letter entitled, 'Keep patois at bay'. I am American and was married to a Jamaican man for eight years. I lived briefly in Jamaica and had a hard time understanding people there.
Protect local inventions
The Editor, Sir: I have just read the article 'Jamaica importing jerk seasoning?' Of course, we should place the imported stuff on the supermarket shelves beside the local jerk seasoning and, in the end, there must be a message sent.

The Editor, Sir: I have been reading your articles concerning Gustav and the trail of damage it has done to your beautiful country. My heart truly goes out to those who have sustained loss and I can only hope the recovery is fast...
