Locals ready for Caribbean Karting Carnival
published: Saturday | July 5, 2008

Glenroy Sinclair, Assignment Coordinator

When the starter waves the flag and sends them on their way for the 'Caribbean Karting Carnival' race meet at the Palisadoes International Raceway today, Jamaica's Colin Daley Jr, Thomas Issa and Jonathan Law, should be among the front runners in the Rotax Minimax Class.

They are expected to be challenged by the United States' Dore Chaponick, the 2008 Florida Winter Tour Minimax champion and Jordon Perry, who won the Homestead Florida Championship last year.

Both Law and Daley are no strangers to the foreigners. They have raced against them on the Florida circuit and made their presence felt.

The qualifying session gets underway at 9 a.m., and the first race is scheduled to begin an hour later.

Speaking with The Gleaner yesterday, Jamaica's Mike Simmons noted that he and his US-based son, Andrew, were ready for action.

Andrew Jackson, whose sons Sean and Joel, along with his daughter Justine, will also be racing, expressed a similar sentiment;

"We are also ready and I am expecting all three karters in my team to finish in the top three of their respective races," said Jackson.

Surprisingly, the veteran Peter Rae will not be racing. Instead, he will be playing the role of team captain, leading the support crew.

Tony Adams of California and his nephew, Sebastian Rae, will be racing under his watchful eyes.

"Thomas (Issa) came down with the flu and has been out of practise for several days, but today (Friday) we are at the track and trying to get ready for the meet," said former race driver, Chris Issa, who spoke with The Gleaner from the track yesterday.

Another top driver, David Summerbell, said: "My kids are ready, they have been practising."

The Jamaicans will be up against teams from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States.
