Alexander Mitchell, Gleaner Writer

  • 5. - Major shifts in technology gadgets: The only constant about technology is that it's always changing. Many of us have been around long enough to experience the revolutionising of gadgets that are geared towards improving our lives. Do you remember these gadgets?

VCRs - Debuted by Sony in 1971, replaced by the DVD player in 2000.

Diskettes - IBM issued the first set in 1971, but this was replaced completely by the flash drive.

Walkman - Sony again was the inventor of the Walkman in 1971; today Apple's iPod has made the Walkman a distant memory.

Typewriter - The first debuted in 1867 and was a hit for decades until the PC came along with Microsoft Word.

Film camera - In 1888, Kodak snapped us up with the first film camera. Take pictures until the film is finished, then you purchase more. Sounds annoying, especially in today's fast-paced world. It's all about the digital!

  • 4. - Unforgettable quotes of all time: They say actions speak louder than words, but some would argue that some statements are so profound, they are forever etched on the canvas of time.

Martin Luther King Jr - 'I Have a Dream' was a landmark speech oozing with inspiration. So too is another quotable quote, "Whatever your life's work is, do it well. A man should do his job so well that the living, the dead, and the unborn could do it no better."

Marcus Garvey - The National Hero and legendary philosopher scored huge on this quote: "If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence, you have won even before you have started."

Malcolm X - His strong appearance alone was enough to convince anyone. Just imagine the faces of the masses when he said: "If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything."

Black American author Maya Angelou's poetry effuses passion and philosophy, having embedded in it the ability to propel human beings to new horizons. She once said, "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it."

  • 3. - Model icons that put Jamaica on the fashion map: Fashion, style, call it whatever you want, Jamaicans don't lack the panache to pull off a couture miracle. Over the years, we've produced some of the finest talent in the fashion industry:

Kimberley Mais: One of Pulse's first gems lit up the run ways all over Europe for 10 years. Having major successes including being Japan's sweetheart and appearing on numerous magazine covers, Mais arguably paved the way for future fashionistas.

Carla Campbell: Despite being around for a few years, Carla's accomplished enormous feats in that time. She's graced the pages of magazines such as Maxim, FHM, Esquire, Vibe, Seventeen, In Style, Cosmo Girl, and Sports Illustrated, to name a few. We hope to have as much tongue-wagging titillation from seeing more of Carla - and the outfits she's advertising - for several years to come.

Jaunel McKenzie: Dubbed the world's top black model by models.com and the number one supermodel on Vibe magazine's hot list 2005, Jaunel has done nothing wrong in an ever-blossoming career. After bursting on to the scene in 2002 as a 15-year-old, everyone knew she was truly a talent to reckon with.

  • 2. - Significant days in August for Jamaica:

August 1 - The day of our long-awaited emancipation of slaves in the British West Indies in 1838.

August 6 - It took more than a century after Emancipation for Jamaica to gain Independence in 1962.

  • 1. - Issue faced by youths today:

Lack of knowledge of their 'rich' culture: Children today are almost clueless about Jamaican heritage and culture. Many, unfortunately, are confused about the real purpose of our public holidays such as National Heroes Day, Emancipation or Independence, as these days are often viewed as an opportunity just to relax and chat.
