The Gleaner's Thursday, July 3 editorial 'The danger of appeasement' mourning the lack of authority exhibited by the Government is 300 years late. The fact is Jamaica has always been two distinct societies as the Maroons never accepted British authority or culture. In the same manner, Jamaicans of African heritage today regard the post-colonial society and those who uphold it as 'Babylon'. If the truth be told the political tribalism only masks the deep anti-Jamaican (Babylon) feelings of the Afro-Jamaicans. The police are hated along with all who exercise authority. Every people admire their national colours except in Jamaica where the red, green and gold of Ethiopia replace the national colour on every occasion. If the popular culture is hostile to the state, is it any wonder that chaos and destruction is the preferred solution to every problem.
Jamaica's economic challenges are no worse than any other Caribbean state, yet we are unable to mobilise the population in any meaningful way to overcome them.
Our present motto 'Out of many one people' is false. The reality is there are two Jamaicas and the solution to its problem is two separate states; sad to say but unfortunately true.
