A hat-trick of wins by two seven-year-old boys, Jonathan Law and Mark Anthony Eaton, was the highlight of the go-kart race held at the Palisdoes International Raceway, Kingston, on Saturday, May 3.
Apart from qualifying on pole, the boys won all three races in the 80 and 50 cc classes, respectively. It was the second consecutive race meet that Law was dominating; he had already bagged the 80 cc class. He now seems to be one of the bright sparks in the NG Racing Camp, which is led by the veteran Peter Moodie Sr.
Surprise defeat
Although they were in high spirits and had reasons to celebrate, the Moodie camp was left stunned in the Rotax Mini Max Class, when their prized driver, Colin Daley Jr, was defeated by an unpopular driver, William Myers, who qualified on pole. Daley bounced back later to win the other two races in that class.
It was a good day for the Jackson camp, which comprised Joel Jackson and his two siblings, Justine and Sean, who dominated the Rotax International Class. Joel took the chequered flag twice, while Sean was able to parade only once with it. Team captain Joel also made his presence felt in the Shifter Class by winning two of the three races. The first in that class went to Peter Moodie Jr
Two other karters, Peter Rae in the Rotax Masters and Philip Myers in the Rotax Junior Classes, also shared in the limelight. They qualified on pole and both won two races in their respective classes. But one of the biggest surprises of the day was the performance of Andrew Simmons.
First-class knowledge
Simmons, who in his teenage years raced competitively at the Palisadoes International Raceway, before pursuing a business career in the United States, has been absent from the track for the last four years, but still has his touch and knowledge of the first-class circuit.
This he demonstrated when he finished in second place twice and then a third. He competed in the Rotax Masters Class, driving the kart his father customarily drives.
"Like father, like son," commented his father, Mike Simmons, who is the only karter in the history of the track to come through the chicane and negotiate the corner on two wheels.
