LEADERS ST Catherine, paced by Danza Hyatt's century, are well on course to lift the inaugural Jamaica Super League title after enjoying a fine opening day against hosts Melbourne yesterday.
A win for the Saints will take them to an unassailable 28 points, while first innings points would see them advance to 25.
Anything less than first innings points for the Kangaroos would kill their chances for title honours as losing first innings points in a drawn contest would only take them to 17.
Melbourne, replying to the Saints' massive 466 all out, resume today on three for one.
Sent in to bat, Junior Stewart, 43, and Keith Hibbert, 31, led the Saints off with a 73-run opening stand which Hyatt then built upon to dent the Kangaroos' hopes with an impressive 116.
Took control
Hyatt, who hit five sixes and 11 fours off 179 deliveries, and captain Tamar Lambert, who scored 30, added 119 for the fourth wicket as St. Catherine took control of the game.
The Saints also benefited from another useful partnership, 78 for the sixth wicket between Shacoya Thomas, 67 not out, and Andre Russell, 68.
Yannick Elliott led the bowling for the Kangaroos with 3-50. Donovan Pagon picked up 2-52 and Courtney Walsh Jr. 2-49.
AT ALPART: St. Eliza-beth Sharks, replying to Manchester Lion's 272, will resume on 42 for two today.
Danville Ricketts, 69, and Jamie Merchant, 43, led the way for the Lions against Ainsley Goss (5-66) and Alton Beckford (3-96).
AT TRELAWNY STADIUM: The Trelawny Bucca-neers were well placed to take first innings points from Jamaica Defence Force (JDF).
Jermaine Edwards, 49, and Mel Wint, 32, top scored for the JDF as they reached 162 against Kemar Allen, 5-35, Oral Ranking, 2-13, and Lorenzo Ingram, 2-34.
Trelawny were 142 for three.
AT SABINA PARK: Westmoreland, replying to Kingston Tigers' 250, will resume on 47 for three.
