Chairman of Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC), Errol Anderson, says he has plans to take motorsport in Jamaica to another level.
"This year, we intend to work closer with the Government, hoping to sell the sport as a tourism product," says Anderson, who was recently re-elected as chairman of the JMMC.
Initial plans
His comments coincide with plans by the Jamaica Race Driver Club (JRDC), which will be staging the first leg of the Caribbean Drivers Champion-ship on Sunday, May 25, at the Dover Raceway in St Ann. Drivers from Guyana, Barbados, Cayman Islands and North America are scheduled to compete. The meet is expected to generate some tourism revenue.
Also, the Jamaica Karting Association will be staging a two-day international race meet in July at the Palisadoes International Raceway, and this should attract another bumper crowd, including overseas patrons.
Anderson says the JMMC will be separating the functions of the sporting authority and the rally sports club.
"We want to better regulate, administrate and separate the functions," argues Anderson.
Improve the sport
He further plans to improve motorsport of all kind in Jamaica, and to work closer with the Jamaica Automobile Association.
At the recent JMMC function, Anderson reported that the JMMC had an interesting two years, with both good and bad experiences.
"Karting has continued to grow as the feeder sport for all motorsport genre. Circuit racing through the organisation of the JRDC has seen considerable growth," said the JMMC chairman. "Drag racing continues to grow and the JMMC is here to help facilitate the growth of them all," he adds.
