EDITORIAL - The challenge of contending ideas
The furore this past week over reports of a textbook being used in some secondary schools with reference to same-sex unions as a type of family option has again thrown into sharp focus the challenge to the Jamaican society of contending values and view points, and how to deal with them.

Cleaning up corruption

The issue of corruption figured prominently in the recently concluded election campaign and persists even after, given the concerns raised about the Cuban-supported programme to replace incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent bulbs. (Phillips)

Silly Derrick, sensible Mike, sorry Bruce

When I used to help the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) at elections, I noticed that the only one who came on time for videotapings was the then Opposition Leader, Edward Seaga. More than that, his text was always finished and polished and he took no time to get into make-up. (Ritch)

The 'irony' of scrap metal

Whether it is spelt 'steal' or 'steel', the booming iron and other metals export trade is big business. It has not been reported to the police, but there is an unconfirmed case of a family in sheer terror a couple of weeks ago, nervous over the intruders outside sawing off their burglar bars. (Taylor)

Families: same or both sexes?

The Gleaner on Wednesday, October 31, carried as its front-page headline, "Same-sex lessons"... The article carried an excerpt from the text which discusses the matter of family structures. (Tyson)
