The Editor, Sir:
Please allow me to respond to the article written by Heather Robinson, in The Gleaner of Friday, December 13. The Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC) is the governing body of motor sport for Jamaica, duly appointed by the world governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).
For the last 16 years we have been staging an overseas invitational motor rally, an event which brings overseas visitors to Jamaica, and in association with the Jamaica Tourist Board, we plan to help market Kingston as a destination, highlighting the vast range of cultural, entertainment, and culinary delights which are available to visitors.
The JMMC, has for the last five years ended this rally dubbed and recognised internationally as 'Rally Jamaica', in the streets of New Kingston.
Excellent safety record
Rallies run through streets internationally at top speeds (compared to our very low speeds, more slow than go) all over the world, our safety record has been excellent. We have always cooperated with the authorities, NWA, police, KSAC, and New Kingston Civic Asso-ciation, making sure that we comply with the law as we are bound to do. Please be assured that the JMMC has copies of and had written approval from all required authorities, one of whom published the requisite road closure notices, prior to the event.
While we understand Ms. Robinson's grief over the loss of her brother, in a motor vehicle accident, the JMMC humbly invites her to become a member, as we may be able to educate her as to our aims and possibly appreciation of our goals, including general road safety.
I am, etc.,
LAWRENCE HENRIQUES
