Dress codes: what to wear
published: Thursday | December 21, 2006

The more thoughtful approach is to stick with the standard categories - white tie, semi-formal, business, casual rather than using ambiguous terms (sport casual, smart casual, elegantly casual) that require an explanation.

White Tie

Men: black tie coat with matching trousers with a single strip of satin, winged collar, white bow tie, black shoes, black socks.

Women: formal evening gown

Black Tie

Men: black tuxedo jacket matching trousers, formal (pique or pleated front) white shirt, black bow tie, black cummerbund to match (or red or striped) black shoes, black socks. In tropical climate a white dinner jacket with black tuxedo pants plus other black tie wardrobe is very acceptable.

Women: formal evening dress or short dressy cocktail dress.

Semi-formal-Lounge suit

Men: dark dressy business type suit with or without a matching vest, white shirt, conservative tie, dressy leather shoes and dress socks.

Women: cocktail dress or long dressy skirt and top.

Business

Men: jacket and trousers to match.

Women: suite dress.

Business casual

Men: sports coat or blazer

Women: Slacks, skirt and open collar top.

Casual

Men: jeans, tee or polo or casual button down the front shirt.

Women: jeans, tee or polo or knitted top or cotton top.
