Jamaica Gleaner Letters
published: Friday | August 8, 2003

Conceptions of morality
THE EDITOR, Sir: IT IS interesting that several positions in defence of Laura Facey-Cooper's new work in Emancipation Park take the form of a critique against latent Eurocentrism in the collective mind of the Jamaican populace.

Miss Lou is Jamaica!
THE EDITOR, Sir, I READ with avidity the articles on Miss Lou's visit to Jamaica and the heroine's welcome she received which was very well deserved.

Students' performance and religion
THE EDITOR, Sir: IT IS rather interesting the inference drawn from the analysis of "A ranking of Schools" by Prof. Stephen Vascianne's Gleaner article of August 4, 2003.

Proper and appropriate
THE EDITOR, Sir: IN ART there is nudity and there is pornography.

Meaning of the statue
THE EDITOR, Sir: I FEEL compelled to write on the meaning of the statue at the entrance to Emancipation Park that was unveiled a few days ago and is the object of so much controversy.

Congrats, Jimmy
THE EDITOR, Sir: CONGRATULATIONS TO Jimmy Cliff on being recognised with the Order of Merit.

'Continue to speak out, Dr Thompson
THE EDITOR, Sir: I WRITE to congratulate Dr. Herbert Thompson on his speech, as reported in Thursday's, August 7, 2003 edition of The Gleaner.

A step in the right direction
THE EDITOR, Sir: A U.S. Customs officer once seized my vegetable sandwich (which was served on a flight from Montego Bay, Jamaica, to Miami, Florida) and warned me vociferously, not to take any "plant material" into the U.S. in future.

Family of George Gaul or Gauld
THE EDITOR, Sir: I AM seeking information on a particular gentleman who lived in the Duckensfield, St. Thomas area. He died sometime between 1970 and 1985.
