President of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA), Dr Walton Small, has called on corporate sponsors to get on board and support schoolgirl football next season.

Small told The Gleaner in an interview following the awards ceremony of the (ISSA) schools football competition at the Versalles Hotel in May Pen, on Thursday, that the competition was completed last season without a major sponsor.

"The ISSA product is good and performance of these girls is a good way to expose their products and the brands," said Small, who is also the principal of Wolmer's Boys.

"I am calling on corporate sponsors to get on board to support this competition next season because these girls are our future Reggae Girls," he said.

Lennon High's Simone Honeyghan was the toast of the ceremony. She was voted the Most Valuable Player and copped the leading goalscorer title with a record 48 goals during the season.

Lennon High captured their second consecutive hold on the trophy with an exciting 3-0 victory over Excelsior High.

"I am feeling really good because I have worked very hard for this," said an elated Honeyghan.

"I am very happy with my performance during the season because I was always confident that we were going to successfully defend our title," said Honeyghan, who is a national Under-20 representative.

Excelsior's 15-year-old Tiffany Robinson won the most promising junior player award with 15 goals during the season. Robinson said she was delighted to win the award.

"This is my first season for my school and to win this award is really a big achievement for me," said the soft-spoken Robinson.

"I am definitely going to score a lot more goals next season because I am going to work really hard to achieve this," said Robinson.

Lennon's Sasha-Lee Cooper copped the best defender award, her teammate Shena Wint won the best goalkeeper prize.

Lennon's coach Merron Gordon was voted the coach of the year. Excelsior was voted the most improved school and St Elizabeth Technical the top rural school.
