Levy, Ashmeade win 100m

Jura Levy avenged her early season defeats to Carrie Russell and, along with Nickel Ashmeade, was crowned Jamaica's Junior 100m champion on yesterday's first day of the two-day Jamaica Amateur Athletic Associa-tion (JAAA) Championships at G.C. Foster College. The meet continues today with the first event at 11 a.m.

Levy, who suffered losses to Russell, the 2006 World Junior 100m bronze medallist at Carifta Trials, Girls' Championships and Carifta Games, won yesterday's event in 11.41, the only legal 100m event of the day.

Gayon Evans was second in 11.53, leaving the Girls' Champion-ships and Carifta winner, Russell, who was slow out of the blocks, third in 11.58.

St Jago's Ashmeade won the men's Under-20 event in 10.21, supported by a positive wind of 2.4 m/s. Sheldon Mitchell was second in 10.57 while Ashmeade's schoolmate, Adolphus Nevers (10.70), was third. World Junior and Youth champion Dexter Lee did not compete.

In the youth section, Kemar Bailey-Cole and Celia Walters topped the qualifiers seeking spots on Jamaica's team to the 6th IAAF World Youth Championships in Italy.

Bailey-Cole won the boys' Under-18 category, which had a positive wind of 5.3 m/s, in 10.52 ahead of Munro's Adam Cummings (10.55) and Calabar's Earl Lee (10.57).

Walters beat her Vere schoolmate Deandre Whitehorne, 11.51 to 11.68. Holmwood's Shericka Moulton was third in 11.91.

the hurdles

In the female 400m hurdles, the Tracey sisters from Edwin Allen dominated.

Nikita Tracey took the women's Under-20 400m hurdles event in 58.86 ahead of Yanique Haye of G.C. Foster (61.68), while in the Under-18 category, Ristananna Tracey clocked 59.19 to beat Wolmer's' Danielle Dowie (59.34). The events had two competitors each.

The men's Under-20 400m hurdles went to Sheldon Williams of Holmwood (53.59) over Dwayne Extol of Wolmer's (53.60), while Orwell Meylor of Wolmer's ran 55.35 to win the boys' Under-18 400m hurdles.

In the 800m, Mackola Joseph of Edwin Allen (2:15.47) and Donohue Williams of Kingston College (1:55.77) were the female and male Under-20 winners. Andre Moodie of Frome (1:56.06), who led into the home straight, was second in the men's event.

Kemoy Campbell ran 14 minutes, 58.56 seconds to win the men's Under-20 5000m.

In the field, Rochelle Reid of St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) cleared 1.65m to win the women's Under-20 high jump while in the Under-18 girls' event, Kimberly Williamson of Edwin Allen (1.80m) beat Petagaye of STETHS (1.75m) and Holmwood's Janieve Russell (1.75m).

43.03m throw to win

Candice Bernard of St Hugh's threw 43.03m to win the women's Under-20 discus throw over her schoolmate Micara Vassell (42.30m), ,while Sasha Gaye Marston of Edwin Allen threw 38.75m to beat Denecia Mitchell of St Andrew High (36.73m) in the Under-18 section.

Yushani Durrant of University of Technology leapt 5.90m to win the women's Under-20 long jump. Annmarie Duffus of Edwin Allen was second with a leap of 5.74m.
