Reggae Jammin 50-over cricket

Digicel made it two wins from as many matches in the Digicel Business House cricket series 2009 Reggae Jammin 50-over league last Sunday when they defeated St Ann Jamaica Bauxite by 53 runs in a low scoring match at Kaiser, Discovery Bay.

Batting first, Digicel made 132 all out off 30 overs - Jowayne Robinson 51 and first-round century maker Lloyd Gold 20 against Andrew Hammond 2-7, Michael Thompson 2-20, Robert Taylor 2-27 and Marlon Gayle 2-29.

St Ann Bauxite 80 all out from 22.2 overs - Emkes Jones 16; Shannon Anderson 4-18, Garfield Moore 3-9.

AT JAMALCO: The home team defeated National Water Commission (NWC) by seven wickets. NWC 149 for nine off 45 overs - Horace Cooke 33, Linton 'Porus' Martin 30, Sidue Hunter 27; Devon Gordon 2-27.

Jamalco 150 for three off 26.1 overs - Barrington Brown 67, Winston 'Sala' Osbourne 51; Neaman Bernard 2-44.

AT JAMAICA COLLEGE: Jamaica Broilers beat Continental Baking Company by 174 runs. Jamaica Broilers 312 for nine off 41.2 overs - Marlon Lindo 93, Anthony Lee 40, skipper Robert Turner 38; Dwight McIntosh 3-58, Nyron Morrison 2-44, Vander Rowe 2-63.

Continental Baking Company 138 all out from 27 overs - Morrison 50; Turner taking 6-37, Charlton Senior 2-25.

The league continues today with Jamalco vs defending champions LIME (formerly Cable & Wireless) at Jamalco, Digicel vs NWC at Kensington Park and Sagicor Life vs Continental Baking Company at Chalmers Avenue. All matches start at 11 a.m.

JDF march on

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) are the early leaders after the opening round mixed division matches in the Reggae Jammin Business House Volleyball competition. The marching men went unbeaten in three matches on the day to top the standings with nine points, followed by UWI with six, NWC five, Guardian 'A' two, BoJ and Guardian 'B' a point each.

In the last of their three games at the UWI gymnasium on Sunday, June 8, JDF made it three wins on the trot, blanking NWC by two sets to nil. The JDF had earlier beaten BoJ by two sets to one, as D. Pinnock led the way for the soldiers with six kills in a 21-20, 19-21, 21-11 win. The JDF came back to beat Guardian 'A' 2-0, thanks to 21-11, 21-15 win.

NWC, meanwhile, beat Guardian 'A' 2-0 with game MVP Ensley Anderson and Jerry Small rising to the occasion.

UWI defeated Guardian 'B' 2-0 with Cheryl Daley of UWI named the game's MVP.

The action continues today with six matches in both the mixed and male divisions starting at 9 a.m. with AMECO vs JDF (male).

Brandy beat Gleaner in domino league

Wray & Nephew Brandy defeated 2006 champions The Gleaner 150-134 in Division I of the Jamaica Electrical Technologies (JET)-sponsored Business House domino league at the Gleaner Sports Club on Friday night after leading from start to finish. Their top pairs were captain Wayne Richards and Errol Brown/Dave Brown and Itania Henry,

It was sweet revenge for Brandy who were beaten by The Gleaner in first-round action some weeks ago.

In their worst season, The Gleaner have now lost four consecutive matches - three in the league and one in the KO competition.

In other Division I matches played on Friday, the 2007 champions Seprod defeated last year's Division II champions Port Authority 150-112, Berger clipped JUTC 120-118, Wray & Nephew Rums defeated JPS 112-106 and Carib Cement beat Sagicor 127-110.

In Division II, leaders National Housing Trust beat Courts 150-135, Pepsi clipped Nutrition Products 131-130, National Baking Company stopped Company Office of Jamaica 142-137, Premix beat Tastee 137-127 and STATIN edged Airports Authority 115-114.

Opening matches in league on today

The KSAFA/Western Sports-sponsored Business House football season gets under way this afternoon at the NWC playing field, Mona, with the dress parade and opening matches in divisions one and two.

The dress parade involving the 15 participating teams drawn from both divisions takes place at 1 p.m. The Division II match between GraceKennedy and Norman Manley International Airport starts at 2 p.m., followed by the big Division I clash between defending Division I champions Carib Cement and promoted Division II champions Jamaica National Building Society at 4 p.m.

The Gleaner, named the best defensive Division I team last year by virtue of making it to both the league and KO finals, bow in tomorrow against NWC at Winchester Park, St George's College, starting at 4 p.m.

Scotiabank win 5-a-side football title

The Scotiabank Group won the Business House five-a-side one day rally at the NWC playing field, defeating the Wisynco Group 1-0 in the final at the NWC playing field, Mona, on Saturday, June 6, for the Pronto Porridge Mix Trophy.

Scotia got the winner from the boots of Tivoli Premier League player Damion Gordon in the 35th minute.

They advanced to the final following their 1-0 win over Courts in the semi-final, while Wisynco beat NWC 2-1 in the other semi-final.

Gordon, whose thunderous shot from an acute angle sealed the issue, was named MVP, while NWC's David Laylor with eight goals, capped the leading goalscorer award.

GraceKennedy Education Run

Registration is now well under way for corporate and individual participants in GraceKennedy's Education Run, a 5K Run Walk scheduled for Sunday, July 5. Corporate registration is being facilitated through the website www.gracekennedy.com, using registration software which allows team captains to upload team registration information directly.

With a few days to go before the June 19 registration deadline, the company is also making registration easy and convenient for individual entrants by providing forms on its website, www.gracekennedy.com; at Hi-Lo stores across the Corporate Area, and at the New Kingston branch of First Global Bank (FGB). Individual participants may make payments at FGB New Kingston, and at GraceKennedy's head office at 73 Harbour Street.

The backdrop for the July 5 GK Education Run is the scenic waterfront of downtown Kingston. The run will start in front of GraceKennedy's head office on Harbour Street and proceed along Fleet Street, Port Royal Street, Nethersole Place, Ocean Boulevard, Port Royal Street and Marcus Garvey Drive, returning along Marcus Garvey Drive on to Harbour Street, then on to Gold Street, and ending on Port Royal Street. The Race will kick off at 7 a.m. starting with runners, followed shortly by wheelchair participants, and then by walkers. Awards will be made to the top three places in each category. There will also be a prize for best T-shirt entry, among other sectional prizes.

The GK Education Run is being held to raise funds in support of educational projects directed by the Grace and Staff Community Development Foundation.
