HEALTH & FITNESS - Weight management for the season!

Published: Monday | December 21, 2009

We are approaching Christmas, the festive season for family and friends and countless functions. Just thinking about the numerous office parties and family dinners that you have to attend, is enough to make you start packing on the pounds.

And for many persons, that is exactly what happens. In January, they have to embark on a weight-loss programme. Many become frustrated when they think these programmes are not working fast enough.

Here are a few tips to prevent packing on the pounds during the Yuletide season.

1. Start a weight-loss programme before Christmas so you have a 'safety margin' for the holiday feasts.

2. Eat lightly the morning of your Christmas functions. This will prevent the calorie intake on that day from being too high.

3. Try to keep your activities and exercise levels high over the Christmas period. This will help you burn the extra calories from the extra meals. Walking on the plazas would be very helpful.

4. Drinking water before or during meals, is also a good way to prevent you from eating too much. It is also a good idea to drink water instead of the many juices laden with sugar and calories.

5. At each meal, try to make smart choices. Where possible, opt for vegetables instead of carbohydrates. Snack on fruits instead of pastries. Also, choose baked chicken over fried chicken since baked chicken has fewer calories.

6. If possible, eat from a smaller plate. This will help to regulate the amount of food you consume.

Over the holidays, whether you've been naughty or nice, it will show in January.
