Stonewalling the enquiry

Published: Monday | December 14, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

I feel compelled to comment on the attitude of some of the persons appearing before the FINSAC Commission of Enquiry. Recently, the former head of FINSAC, along with the former financial secretary, have caused to be strengthened, in my mind, what I believe about persons who hold high posts in Jamaica. They apparently believe that if something is not important to them, it is not worth addressing or indicating any care about it. Both persons avoided and, in some cases, refused to answer questions which would go a far way in offering insight or closure for affected Jamaicans.

Unfortunately, many of these persons when they retire or while currently employed enjoy a higher social and financial status than most in Jamaica so, for them, an answer is not necessary. Hearing of individuals whose families or lives have been torn apart because of financial issues does not compel them to act. Too often in Jamaica we adopt the view that once I am not affected, who cares? It cannot be this way. In every sector of public service we are employed to serve the public, so even if it may not be in our interest whether personal, political or social, we are bound to speak to the issue as it is important to someone.

If the shoe were on the other foot and those in a lower strata had answers to questions that persons in such positions had, they would be facing serious sanctions or worst.

A waste of time

For many, the commission is already a waste of time as they hold the view that none of the major players who contributed to the meltdown will be held criminally liable or financially culpable. Now, added to this, the attitude of some of the subpoenaed are dismissing the commission as nothing more than a political stunt or below their level.

For them, I say it is better to speak the truth, cost it what it may, because the good master above knows all and when he asks all of us before his commission, we will be answering even if we try not to.

I am, etc.,
