Pining for 'yard' flavour

The Editor, Sir:

I was very happy to hear recently that the sugar cane crop is off to a good start. I only hope we can get some of the good Jamaican brown sugar over here in Portland! For quite a while now, the only sugar I see is so pale in colour it is almost white sugar - and it is probably imported at that.

My sympathies are with the citrus producers, having to battle their own government to get any support. I do not understand why we are importing anything that is already produced here. This is evident in the supermarkets in everything from canned tuna to breakfast cereals. On the other hand, I can go in almost every supermarket in the United States and find Pickapeppa sauce, but cannot find it in Portland after checking five markets in Port Antonio.

We hear a lot of chat about brand Jamaica and buy Jamaican, but where are the actions to match the words? Perhaps we, the people, must use the power of our few likkle dollars and refuse to buy the imports!

I am, etc.,
