A site for the tourism school
Published: Saturday | December 12, 2009
After reading an article in this newspaper about the Govern-ment's procrastination in identifying a suitable site to build a tourism school with the assistance of the Spanish government, I have a suggestion.
I also urge the St James Parish Council and the private sector in the Second City to press the three Jamaica Labour Party members of parliament from the parish to help make the case.
I am suggesting that the school be located on lands adjacent to the retirement community at Irwin in St James. This piece of land is about 10 minutes from the city centre and would be an ideal location for an institution that fits perfectly in line with the parish's main income earner.
The spin-offs from location of the school on these lands could be twinned with efforts from the water and housing ministry to speed up the formalisation of the Operation pride lands, putting a dent in the festering of squatter settlements and crime.
benefits
There are so many benefits to be derived from locating the school in this area, even being mindful of any preliminary assessment that may preclude its feasibility. With the school's proximity to the customers, employees, hotels and beaches, etc, the social, educational, environmental, economical, infrastructural benefits, and the list goes on, will be immense. I am sure other residents from the parish will express their support in short order.
I am, etc.,
