Walters set for bout in Haiti

PANAMA CITY, Panama (CMC):

Undefeated Jamaican featherweight boxer Nicholas Walters is booked to travel next Tuesday to Haiti where he faces his biggest assignment of his fledgling pro career, on Friday, December 18.

Coming off a four-month injury lay-off, Walters will tackle Dominican Republic's unbeaten Carlos Manuel Reyes for the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) FedeLatin crown at the Karibe Convention Centre.

Haitian Jacques Deschamps, who manages Walters, will promote the bout in partnership with Premium Boxing Promotions, of Panama, and is satisfied with the young boxer's preparation.

"Training is going well. He is doing well," Deschamps told CMC Sport.

Walters boasts an unblemished record of 12-0 with 10 knockouts and Reyes is 13-0 with seven knockouts.

Panama-based Walters has not boxed since suffering a fractured hand in August when he knocked out Colombian Ernesto Vasquez.

He needed surgery for the injury, but is fully recovered and ready to resume his career.

"He is in good shape. He never really stopped training. Although the injury prevented him from boxing, he was in the gym regularly doing other things," Deschamps said.

The Walters-Reyes showdown will be one of two title fights on the card, as former European Union champion, French-Haitian boxer Jimmy Colas, will tackle Colombian champion Jhon Berrio for the interim World Boxing Council Latino light-middleweight title.
