Georges prevail despite wasted chances

EVEN though they won, St Georges coach Braxton Hyre pointed to deficiencies in converting chances by his team, which carved out a 2-1 victory over bottom-placed August Town in the Digicel Premier League match at Lynch Park, Portland, on Sunday.

"We dominated the game from the start," said Hyre.

He added: "Most of the teams in the league are plagued by poor finishing and with Georges it is no different. We created many chances.

"However, with last week's loss to Harbour View we were in dire need of three points to make up for that losing effort," Hyre said, pointing to their 0-2 loss the previous week.

In a game totally dominated by Georges, whose players squandered no fewer than eight clear chances in the first half, and an additional 10 or more in the second half, the Portland-based team took the early attack to the visitors through Damion Harwood, Romeo Parkes, Girvon Brown and Ushane Dobson.

Moves paying off

The quartet easily made inroads into the defence of August Town, with Harwood missing a clear chance in the opening three minutes. Numerous scoring opportunities went abegging during the first half, as the visitors simply had no answer to the persistent assaults.

When Hyre decided to pull Harwood in the 62nd minute, replacing him with Richardo Watson, and shortly after replacing Dobson with Daniel Shaw, the moves paid off.

Shaw picked up a pass on the right flank and made the perfect cross to Brian Wollaston lurking on the edge of the six-yard box. With a powerful header, Wollaston beat goalkeeper Devon Haughton, who had kept brilliantly all afternoon, to give the homesters a 1-0 lead in the 75th minute.

For the next nine minutes, it was all Georges, with Shaw, Parkes, Wollaston and Brown firing shots from all angles, only to be denied by high quality goalkeeping.

Finally though, August Town pulled level in the 84th minute through a well taken free kick from approximately 25 yards by Ajuran Brown.

However, Georges were to have the final say and they put the issue beyond doubt in the 89th minute when Brown scored a right-footed shot from a cross made by Wollaston.

Losing coach Calvert Fitzgerald praised his team for the effort.

"Georges went ahead and we were able to draw level through a well taken free kick. It was a good game, but it was always going to be difficult at Lynch Park."
