The Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts presents 'The Sweetness of Poetry and Tings' - a lunch-hour concert featuring Joan Andrea Hutchinson, Dr Michael Abrahams and WOW. The concert will be held at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts (PSCCA), UWI, Mona, on Thursday, November 12 at 1 p.m. The show is open to the public and admission is free.

'The Sweetness of Poetry and Tings' continues on the fine tradition and the mandate of the PSCCA to present performing arts representing various genres, as part of the process of entertaining and enlightening the university community and the wider population. This particular event presents an interesting, eclectic mix of three writers and performing poets, with three exciting and complementary styles.

Headlining the event will be author, poet and cultural educator Joan Andrea Hutchinson, who will take the audience on a journey into the creative practices of Jamaican 'poor' people with readings from her soon-to-be-published book Kin Teet Kibba Heart Bun. This represents the culmination of four years of research, producing a document which celebrates how Jamaican 'poor people' creatively stretch a dollar to make their lives work.

Presented with her trademark humour, Hutchinson reminds us when we used to draw starch, carry half pencil and half book to school, make milk-box balls and use lime and salt and a piece of zinc in the backyard to make white clothes dazzle. She will also be performing material from her six already published CDs and two books.

The concert also features the thought-provoking and inspirational poetry of WOW (Winroy Williams). A self-proclaimed 'student of the mind'. His rural upbringing has fostered an appreciation for nature and the arts, manifested in his love for creative writing and music. The consistent and universal themes in his poetry include love, nature, spirituality and philosophy and you chuckle as you see yourself as the protagonist in his work.

laughter and reflection

Completing the package is medical practitioner, poet, songwriter and humourist Dr Michael Abrahams, whose prescription is to make you laugh while you reflect. His impressive collection of topical poems and songs analyses, poeticises and sometimes pokes fun at religion, politicians, relationships and celebrates Barack Obama and Usain Bolt. Abrahams uses humour therapy to ease the pain of his patients in labour and, onstage, delivers exciting doses of his special brand of social commentary.

Come out, relieve the stress and invite your friends to 'The Sweetness of Poetry and Tings'.
