Relay contests and a fitness report card are the additional attractions for this year's Wolmer's Ocean Spray WATA Road Race & Relays.

The day of activities, set for November 22, which was announced at Wednesday's press launch at Wolmer's Boys' School, will for the first time see a relay event, which will take participants around Heroes Circle.

The top relay teams, male and female, will take home $5,000, while second and third will walk away with $3,000 and $2,000, respectively.

However, the 5K-road race will attract the biggest prize money, with $15,000 going to the top male and female high-school teams. In this section, teams will be allowed to enter as many runners as possible, but only the top five will contribute towards the championship standings.

The top male and female runners will also earn $12,000, while $8,000 and $5,000 will go to the respective second- and third-place finishers in either category.

Fitness report card

Prize money will also be awarded based on excellence in other age group sections, namely Under-12, 13-14, 15-19, 20-35 and Over-35.

The fitness report card will be for all participants who report onsite before 3:45 p.m., when the last personal best will be assessed. The fitness report card, compliments of the title sponsor, will provide personal information on the athletes including their height, weight, fat percentage, water percentage, muscle percentage and calories, measured along with the time in which they completed the event.

Apart from Wisynco - through its brand, Ocean Spray WATA - the other sponsors are Puma, which contributed close to $200,000 to become a gold sponsor; relay sponsor, Singer; and associate sponsors, MVP Track Club, Scotia DBG Investments and Ensure.

Ocean Spray proud

Wisynco will donate 50 cases of Ocean Spray WATA to the first five schools that register with 50 athletes. The final date for entries is Saturday, November 14. Normal registration closes on Wednesday, November 18.

Registration fee for relay teams is $1,000, while for the 5K race, the fee is $400 for adults (Over 19) and $300 for students (Under-19). All fees will be increased by $100 if registration is done on race day.

Dr Walton Small, principal of Wolmer's, who brought greetings, thanked the sponsors and urged participants "to conduct yourself in a way which will allow the sponsors to return next year".

Ocean Spray's country manager, Tamara Ward, said her company was "proud to be associated with this event again".

She said she was looking forward to an exciting competition, especially with the prize package, which includes a trip for the top male and female students, who will be allowed to take along with them four of their peers on a trip to Cool Runnings in Negril, sponsored by Ocean Spray WATA.
