Dirty lyrics, complaints on the decline

The media fraternity and the music industry are complying more and more with the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica in a bid to clean up the nation's airwaves.

Chairman of the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica, Dr Hopeton Dunn, said the responsive attitude of the entities has resulted in a significant reduction in the number of complaints to the commission.

"Complaints relating to the transmission of sexually explicit and violent conduct in media has declined and perhaps more importantly, we have seen a reduction in the number of bleeps, that seeks to camouflage certain kinds of conduct in media," he said.

But despite the decrease in the activity, the chairman said the commission was not at the end stage in the oversight and regulation of the matter.

Vigilance continues

"We will continue to be vigilant. We know that this is a day-to-day matter and that we have the benefit of a whole range of community media monitors assisting us who feel they cannot undermine the country by allowing these types of things to be taking place among their peers," Dunn added.
