Come clean - Opposition demands details from prime minister

The Opposition People's National Party (PNP) is urging Prime Minister Bruce Golding to "come clean" when he addresses Parliament today.

Golding is slated to use today's sitting of the House of Represen-tatives to address the sudden resignations of central bank governor Derick Latibeaudiere and Police Commissioner Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, and the Opposition wants the full details.

"In light of the resignations of the commissioner of police and the governor of the Bank of Jamaica on the weekend, followed by the predictable consequence of the 'Triple C' downgrade by Standard and Poor's, it is now past urgent for the prime minister to come clean to the nation," Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller said in a release yesterday.

Sense of direction needed

"The prime minister must indicate to the country his administration's plans to retrieve the situation and give a sense of direction which, to date, has been missing," added Simpson Miller.

She said the Opposition was concerned about the "abject lack of transparency in relation to these resignations, with no hint of any concrete plans to stabilise the deteriorating social climate".

According to Simpson Miller, "The fragile economic conditions and the deteriorating public-safety environment demand nothing short of a full and honest conversation with the people of Jamaica to find a road that can take us out of this deepening crisis."
