A new-look police car should hit the streets shortly.

The authorities have started placing markings on 90 Suzuki motor cars that have been ordered from Stewart's Auto Sales and the design is like nothing the police force now has.

The vehicles are being painted with the black, green and gold colours of the national flag in prominent positions, while the plate is the police division and the vehicle number.

However, up to late yesterday, it was not yet clear who had made the decision to introduce the new colours.

According to the police force, the decision would have to be made by the national security minister, but Richard Reese, permanent secretary in the ministry, told The Gleaner he was not aware of the markings and would have to check.

There was also no indication as to when the vehicles would be handed over to the police as, up to yesterday, the Ministry of National Security had not paid Stewart's the US$1.79 million (J$159.31 million), which is the full value of the cars.

"We are awaiting settlement as it relates to the contract, and this is yet to be finalised," Kent LaCroix, special projects manager at Stewart's, told The Gleaner recently.

Yesterday, Stewart's confirmed the status of the payment had not changed.
