Jamaica washed out of President's Cup

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC): Title-holders Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) will clash with archrivals Barbados in the semi-finals of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) President's Cup, after rain ruined the final round of matches on yesterday.

Heavy overnight and morning rain left all four venues waterlogged, forcing officials to abandon the fixtures without a ball bowled.

Play was called off early at Uitvlugt where Barbados were scheduled to meet the Leeward Islands, before officials called it quits in the other three fixtures when it became patently clear the venues would be unfit for action.

Jamaica and the Windward Islands were expected to meet at Enmore, Trinidad & Tobago and Combined Campuses and Colleges were supposed to do battle at Everest, while Guyana and West Indies Under-19s were lined up against each other at Bourda.

Teams were awarded a point each for the abandoned games.

It was the second successive day the adverse weather had intervened, with only one match reaching a conclusion in the second round on Friday when Guyana walloped Barbados by seven wickets.

As a result of the third round abandonment, T&T finished top of Zone A on seven points, after beating Jamaica in the first round on Wednesday and gaining a bonus point and taking a point from their ruined game against the Windward Islands on Friday.

Barbados, meanwhile, finished second in Zone B with five points following their win over West Indies Under-19s on Wednesday and their subsequent loss to Guyana on Friday.

The Under-19s and the Leeward Islands both finished on two points after first round losses and subsequent washouts.

Hosts Guyana finished on top of Zone B with nine points after two convincing wins over the first two rounds against the Leewards and Barbados, respectively, and the point from the abandoned match.

They will line up against surprise semi-finalists Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC), who earned their final-four berth courtesy of a narrow victory over Windward Islands in the opening round on Wednesday.

The Floyd Reifer-led squad finished on six points, ahead of powerhouses Jamaica who ended with a paltry two points, along with the Windwards.

Jamaica lost their opening game to T&T and then fell victim to the weather and were the biggest losers in the competition, especially boasting their star-studded side.

In the semi-finals, T&T will meet Barbados at the Guyana National Stadium tomorrow, while Guyana will tackle CCC on Tuesday at the same venue in day/night fixtures.

Organisers indicated yesterday that if any one or both of the semi-finals fail to be played, then T&T and Guyana will advance to the final under competition rules based on topping their respective zones.
