Western Bureau:Glenmuir High School captured the first rural title of the 2009 ISSA/Pepsi/Digicel senior schoolboy football season yesterday afternoon, when they turned in an efficient performance to spank Munro College 3-0 in the Ben Francis Knock Out final.
Skipper Ricardo Webber, Jamar Jackson and Paul Wilson were the scorers for the Patrick 'Jackie' Walters-coached Glenmuir, which now join Cornwall College as the competition's most successful team with six liens on the coveted title.
"After the somewhat lacklustre performance against Paul Bogle in the semi-final we had no way to go but up and we did that today," said Walters "I believe we played a very good game today and deserve to win."
For Munro's coach Hopeton Gilchrist, who was seeking to give his team their first major title since 1964, the result was most disappointing. In fact, he felt his team was in charge until they conceded the first goal.
"We were enjoying the better of the action until Glenmuir scored," said Gilchrist. "We gave up our grip on the game when we gave up that first goal and we never recovered."
In the opening minutes of the game, Munro had the advantage but wasted two early opportunities to take the lead in the fourth and sixth minutes. Firstly, Christopher Wint fired high over the crossbar from close range and then Errol Davis cut in neatly from the right flank, but fired wide.
Glenmuir got their first chance in the 10th minute when Jackson fired a speculative shot from 45 yards which flew inches wide of the left upright, with the Munro goalkeeper struggling to get into position.
After seeing Munro wasting further chances in the 18th minute through Wint, Glenmuir came into their own and should have scored in the 24th minute when Jackson capitalised on a defensive error and fired wide.
Glenmuir took the lead in the 31st minute when a free-kick by Davion Piper flew into the crowded goal area and was smartly turned in by Webber, making the half-time score 1-0.
good end-to-end action
The second half started with good end-to-end action as both teams traded good attacks. In the 53rd minute, Webber failed to control a pass inside the goal area, wasting a good chance and two minutes later, Kenroy Rowe had a similar miss for Munro.
With time ticking away and Munro threatening to haul themselves back in control, Glenmuir doubled their lead in the 83rd minute. A sparkling free-kick by Jackson flashed across the face of the goal, struck the right upright and flew into the goal, making the score 2-0.
Glenmuir then sealed the deal in the 87th minute with a superb strike. Wilson took a neat pass on the right flank, danced around two defenders and with a clear shot on goal, fired past the goalkeeper to make the final score 3-0.
