Scrap parish council system

Published: Wednesday | October 28, 2009

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE SITUATION is even worse than I had assumed for, in coming to the defence of the parish council system, Maria Buchanan has inadvertently let it slip that after decades and billions of taxpayers' dollars down the drain, only one parish council, the Manchester Parish Council, under the leadership of Cecil Charlton, has ever fulfilled its mandate.

Use county councils

She also states that the core function of parish councils is town planning. Duh! With two small cities and some minuscule towns islandwide, why do we need 14 bureaucracies to carry out that function?

Seems to me this is reason enough to scrap the parish council system and move to county councils because Jamaica is not made up a series of self-governing independent states.

I am, etc.,
