Jamaica's senior netballers, riding high on their inspiring win over world number-one Australia in the National Commercial Bank Sunshine Series inside the National Indoor Sports Centre on Sunday, are hoping to continue their winning ways against New Zealand at the same venue tonight.
The Jamaican fought hard to carve out a 56-55 win over the Aussies to level their two-match series 1-1 and seasoned defender Althea Byfield, who was in impressive form during the Australians visit, is hoping to use her experience against the Silver Ferns to help the team to what would be their second win against the New Zealanders after 42 games against them.
Byfield, who spent several months in New Zealand earlier this year while representing the Central Pulse in the ANZ Championship, is hoping to put to good use the tactical secrets that she shares for some of the New Zealand players.
"I just want to go out there and pick up where I left off (against Australia)," said Byfield. "I know a bit more about the New Zealand players and their style because I was living there, so I think I have an advantage as far as knowing most of their weaknesses."
Difficult opponent
Like the Diamonds, Byfield is expecting the Silver Ferns to be a difficult opponent to break down and warned that there is little difference between the two teams in terms of quality.
"To me, they are just the same (as Australia) because they play a high level of netball and their intensity and professionalism is also very high. The only difference is probably the way they approach the game," Byfield said.
Centre Court player Nichala Gibson is itching to face the world number-two ranked New Zealanders and thinks it's about time Jamaica secure another win against them, having not done so since 2002.
Confidence
"They have always been elusive in that we have always had them in terms of dominating and let them go, so we need to get a good start a keep the pressure on them," said Gibson. "We want this victory against New Zealand to build our confidence and end our international season on a high note."
She added: "I expect our team to put on a show. We have shown our character against Australia, so we just need to stick to our team strategy ... go out there and do our best."
