Fowler in 18-man squad

According to a source, Zeniffe Fowler, is the only newcomer in an 18-man squad named yesterday by the Jamaican selectors to continue preparation for the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) President's Cup one-day tournament, which is set to be played in Guyana later this month.

The source also disclosed that opening batsman Chris Gayle and all-rounder David Bernard Jr have been recommended at captain and vice-captain, respectively.

Fowler, a former Jamaica Under-19 representative and opening batsman who represents Super League champions Manchester, has been somewhat impressive in the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) trial matches.

A student at The Mico University College, he scored 73 and 97 in the second and third trial matches, respectively.

The squad will be cut to 14 in just over a week's time, just ahead of its October's 21st departure for the championship, where Jamaica will open against defending champions Trinidad & Tobago on October 28.

The source disclosed the if Fowler is not selected for final 14, he will be recommended for the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) team.

The Gleaner also learnt that another junior representative, John Ross Campbell, who studies at the University of Technology, will also be recommended for the CCC team.
