Jamaica's practical shooting grand master, Lesgar Murdock, is back in the island after another impressive show at last month's United States Handgun Nationals in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Murdock competed in both the open and limited divisions at the championships which took place from September 11-19.
His best placing came in the limited shoot where he was seventh overall, a big improvement on last year's 31st position. He was first among the international shooters who came from a number of countries, including Israel, Canada, Dubai and Caymans Islands with a 92.84 per cent score.
In the earlier four-day open division tournament which began on September 12, Murdock, who competed in testing over 100 degrees Fahrenheit temperature, still managed to finish 14th overall of 281 competitors with an 88.31 per cent score. His placing was a slight improvement on his 18th spot at the 2008 tournament in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The Jamaican marksman was quite satisfied with his performance, one which he expected due to his intense preparation leading up to the tournament.
"I knew I would do well because I trained very hard. Before the international match I trained for four days in Orlando, Florida. I am quite satisfied with my performance," Murdock said on Thursday.
He also had high praise and a special thanks for the Jamaica Rifle Association which sent five shooters to the championships, his family and friends for their support.
Murdock, whose long-term goal is to represent Jamaica at the 2012 Olympics in the air pistol event, is now looking forward to the Florida Open which will be held in Frost Proof next February. At last year's Florida Open the 29-year-old former Jamaica College and York Castle High student was fourth overall with a 91.50 per cent score.
