What better way to honour your alma mater and your loved one's memory than to establish a library in his name for future generations? That's exactly what some Campion College past students did on Wednesday night. They launched the Vision 2020 Campaign at the prestigious Kingston 6 campus.

Plans were unveiled for the new main library, which is to be named The Jonathan Stewart Library in honour of a past student who died tragically in an accident 19 years ago. It is to be funded largely by the Stewart family.

Perfect fit

Speaking with The Gleaner yesterday, Adam Stewart, head of the Sandals Resorts International and brother of the deceased, said since the passing of Jonathan in 1990, the family has looked long and hard for a way to honour his brother that would live on. "The Andrew Mahfood-led Vision 2020 was the perfect fit. My dad and myself are also alumni and like many of this island's great high schools, Campion has produced several great Jamaican leaders."

He further stated that he knew his brother would be proud to have his name linked to something as meaningful as a library at the place where he made lasting friendships, and in spite of the challenging times, "if the group can raise US$350,000, our family will match it," he said.

Stewart said the target date to raise the funds and get all the necessary approvals is the end of next year, so that ground can be broken in 2011. He had high praises for the current principal and staff who, he said, are doing an excellent job at his alma mater.
